Many years ago when I was first diagnosed with breast cancer, I was assigned to a medical team that included an oncologist. I met with him as scheduled, and at that he presented me with a printout from WebMD that he indicated would serve as the framework for my treatment. It included chemotherapy, radiation and an aromatase inhibitor for 5 years. At that time, he also set me first appointment for the following week and sent me on my way. And when I returned home, I called his office and cancelled my appointment and contacted my primary care physician for a second referral.

It was the first of many times that I chose to listen to my instincts and served as the main reason that I started the website to help others to understand that they could also do their own research and not settle for the direction that they were given. The only bad part was that the new referral to whom I was sent was in the same office as the firs oncologist and I did not wan to ever see him again. So, when I shared this information with office staff, they helped work out a program whereby they would sneak me in the back door of the offices and take me to an exam room when the coast was clear.

For that team and that oncologist I will forever be grateful as this oncologist tested my tumor and when he received the results, we sat down together, discussed those results to agree to a plan that was entirely different (big surprise) and I have never regretted a single moment of that decision even now some 15 years later. And I want every other survivor to know that they may do the same. You are not alone and if I can help so much as a single person with the information shared here, I am more grateful than you will ever know.
