Whitney Houston’s Valentine’s Message

The untimely death of Whitney Houston has caught all of us by surprise. I couldn’t help but think about her life and all of the pain that must have been hers. This exquisitely beautiful and talented woman has not only given us so much awesome music but also some of the most wonderful messages in the lyrics that she sang. As I reflected on my favorites on this Valentine’s Day eve, I couldn’t help but share what I believe is the most significant words she ever voiced.

These words come from her song, “The Greatest

I think that learning to love yourself is not only the greatest gift that you will ever receive but is also the greatest legacy given to us by Whitney Houston. The sad part is that I don’t think that she ever learned to do this for herself.
Love of All” and read as follows:

Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all

I started to think about all of those people who are sad on Valentine’s Day because they either don’t have a significant other in their lives or if they do, they have such great expectations about what they want or are expecting from another person. They are so caught up in the commercial messages that they have lost complete sight of the love that they are and the love that they give. And every person caught up in this big holiday in such a negative way needs to stop and think about the message that Whitney Houston has given to all of us.

The greatest gift that we can ever receive on Valentine’s Day or any other day is to love ourselves. We have lived perfectly unique lives, having to deal with many difficulties and we have survived. We have accomplished so much in so many different arenas and have never stopped to give ourselves some very well-deserved credits and accolades. We have always been loving and caring people, giving of ourselves to others. But, we may have always been searching for the love of others without ever giving that love first and foremost to the most important person in our world and that is our self.

If you choose to love yourself as the lyrics say, you will find that you will never again judge the love of another person based upon anything material that they might give to you. Their giving you their love is all that will ever matter. I think that learning to love yourself is not only the greatest gift that you will ever receive but is also the greatest legacy given to us by Whitney Houston. The sad part is that I don’t think that she ever learned to do this for herself.
