The Spirit of Super Bowl Sunday

For days now, everyone has been talking about this day. While I do enjoy the big game, I have noticed that this event seems to create a very special atmosphere. Friends everywhere are gathering together and special foods are being prepared. Fans of each team have been decking out themselves and their homes in the colors of their favorites and proclaiming which team is going to win. And there is such a festive gathering not only at the game site but also in just about every pub and sports location across the land. But, what I particularly noted is that these gatherings and celebrations are not limited to just the competing team’s fans but includes those who have never watched a football game in their lives. So what is the driving force behind the celebrations?

I think that the benefits of adding fun days like this into our lives make us all so much happier and it reminds us how grateful we are for those around us with whom we love to share our time and space. Such to me is the lessons of what a great Super Bowl Sunday celebration represents.Barbara Jacoby

It seems to me that this is the perfect setup for people to get together and any excuse to do so is greatly appreciated. Since it is not a holiday, there are no obligations to include family members if this is not your choice. This is a perfect time to gather together with as few or as many people that you want. As this is an event day, there is plenty of television coverage that has been going on for days to create an awesome party atmosphere. The fun part can also be in the sharing of food favorites that are not considered to be traditional holiday fare. It is the perfect time for everyone to contribute a special favorite to create a potluck gathering to cover everything from hors d’oeuvres to dessert with something for all to enjoy.

Most importantly, it is all about having a day to relax and enjoy alone or to share with anyone else that you wish to include. If you don’t normally go out, this may be the perfect day to go to a nearby bar or restaurant to share the excitement of the day and to meet new people, especially if you have something in common like being fans of the same team. No special rules are in place regarding how best to enjoy the day but it does point out that it truly isn’t necessary to have a holiday or even a special event in order to get together and share with friends.

The excitement of this day will certainly carry into next week for many and I think that it would be nice if we would all consider the idea of creating our own “special events” on a regular basis to share with whomever we choose. It could be anything from a movie viewing party to a television program marathon watch to a date day. No rules apply other than the day should be shared by at least one other person. This is a fun get together so that is the only requirement to keep in mind. And wouldn’t it be fun to schedule a few of these throughout the year, especially when there are no holidays that would naturally create a gathering. I think that the benefits of adding fun days like this into our lives make us all so much happier and it reminds us how grateful we are for those around us with whom we love to share our time and space. Such to me is the lessons of what a great Super Bowl Sunday celebration represents.
