Getting Together for Super Bowl Sunday

It seems as though everyone has been talking about the Super Bowl for months. There is a special feeling in the air as discussion center around not only the game itself and who will win but also the commercials, the half-time show, the Puppy Bowl and just about everything else imaginable. As always, I am looking forward to the game as I am a huge football fan but there is something else that I have noticed and that is that this event seems to create a very special atmosphere unlike any other. Friends everywhere are gathering together and special foods are being prepared. Fans of each team have been decking out themselves and their homes in team colors and proclaiming that their team is going to win. And there are festive gatherings not only at the game site but also in just about every pub and sports location across the land. But, what I particularly noted is that these gatherings and celebrations are not limited to just the competing teams’ fans but includes those who have never watched a football game in their lives. So what is the driving force behind the celebrations?

I believe that the benefits of adding fun days like this into our lives would make us all so much happier and it reminds us how grateful we are for those around us with whom we love to share our time and space.Barbara Jacoby

It seems to me that this is a perfect opportunity for people to get together as this event is like no other. Since it is not a holiday, there are no obligations to include family members if that is your preference. You can gather together with as few or as many people as you wish and since this is an event day, there is plenty of television coverage that has been going on for days to create an awesome party atmosphere. The fun part can also be in the sharing of food favorites that are not considered to be traditional holiday fare and it provides a great time for everyone to contribute a special favorite to create a potluck gathering to cover everything from hors d’oeuvres to dessert with something for all to enjoy.

Most importantly, it is all about having a day to relax and enjoy alone or to share with anyone else that you wish to include. If you don’t normally go out, this may be the perfect day to go to a nearby bar or restaurant to share the excitement of the day and to meet new people, especially if you have something in common like being fans of the same team. No special rules are in place regarding how best to enjoy the day but it does point out that it truly isn’t necessary to have a holiday or even a special event in order to get together and share with friends.

The excitement of this day will certainly carry into next week for many and I think that it is a great time for creating our own “special events” on a regular basis to share with whomever we choose. It could be anything from a movie viewing party to a television program marathon or a date day. No rules apply other than the day should be shared by at least one other person. The only requirement to keep in mind is that it needs to be fun for those included. And wouldn’t it be great to schedule a few of these get-togethers throughout the year, especially when there are no holidays that would naturally create such a gathering? I believe that the benefits of adding fun days like this into our lives would make us all so much happier and it reminds us how grateful we are for those around us with whom we love to share our time and space. This, to me, is what a great Super Bowl Sunday celebration represents.
